„HAM-radio is not only a hobby – it can also be a passion…“
Dear YL, dear OM, dear SWL,
many thanks for visiting my page!
My name is Thomas (nick: Tom).
I’m interested in Radio since the age of 10. First I was a SWL using my fathers tube-receiver from the sixties. My career as a radio operator starts with 12 on CB (12 channels and 0,5W in AM). A few years later the sun activity provides short skips on CB with the then allowed 4 Watts (40 channels in FM) within Europe … nice time!
These experiences has comforted me to became a radio amateur. So I licenced in 1989. After this there was a great break regarding education and family. Then I was only active on 2m.
Many thanks to local OM’s – they activated my couriosity again in this hobby in Feb 2017. At this time I started working HF. Now I try to catch up on everything on the HF-bands 🙂
In October 2018 I began working VHF/UHF via LOS (low orbit satellites). In September 2019 I started with SHF via QO 100. The next steps are to gain experiences in the LF-bands.
So I’m active at the moment on HF, VHF, UHF and SHF.
I’m also interested in repairing and refurbishing vintage HAM-gear and measuring equipment. Primary I want to sell the repaired things but I have not the heart to do this with this solid proper technic which is still working now for 30 years or more. So it looks like that I collect and use all this nice technical things for myself. Sometimes I wake up a vintage TXR to make some QSO’S. Then i feel remorse that I’ve not started working HF before – at this time where you have adjust „plate“ and „load“ separate and you can see the glow of your final tubes 🙂
The interest in high frequency technic was also responsible for my occupational choice. I’ve an primary education as an electronic engineer. A few yaers later I succesfully completed an university of applied sciences for industrial engineering. In the „preliminary“ end I finished studies in economics with a master degree. If you don’t go forewards, you go backwards – thats my personal approach.
„Stallehr“ ist a small village near Bludenz with approx. 300 inhabitants in the westernmost state of Austria called „Vorarlberg“. This area is very famous for climbing, biking, hiking and skiing. The other side of the coin regarding the mountains around my QTH: they make it is sometimes very difficult to work some DXCC (special direct to the south) or work via LOS regarding the short transits. But thats the challange 🙂
In the South Vorarlberg is bordered through the Silvretta peaks (up to 3.312 m a.s.l.). This mountain massiv is geographically a part of the central alps. In the north Vorarlberg is limited by the „Lake Constance“ (395 m a.s.l.) nearby Bregenz. Bregenz is the capital of Vorarlberg and well known for „Bregenz Festival“. Bregenz is approx. 40 km away from HAM-Radio exhibition in Friedrichshafen.
So you can climb up mountains over 3000 m or you can swim in „Lake Constance“ within 80km – really a fine area for living! Vorarlberg has national borders to Switzerland, Principality of Liechtenstein and Germany.
Good luck, good DX and greetings from Austria!
